AI as Your Practical Work Assistant

Use AI on one piece of real work, not just writing and search.

You finish with
One real piece of work completed or materially improved with AI
Time
30–45 minutes
Best for
Owners, executives, managers, and professionals using AI individually

Most people begin with AI by drafting emails, summarizing documents, or asking questions. Those are useful, but AI becomes much more valuable when you treat it like a capable work assistant you can brief, question, correct, and use to improve real work.

Before you start

  • Choose one real task already on your desk.
  • Use an AI tool you are comfortable with.
  • Do not choose a task where an undetected error could create serious consequences.

The exercise

  1. Pick real work

Choose something you already need to do: prepare for a meeting, review a proposal, compare alternatives, organize information, research an issue, or improve an existing draft.

  2. Give AI enough direction

Use CARGO as a thinking structure: Context, Assignment, Requirements, Guidance, Output. You do not need to fill out five boxes every time; the point is to stop making AI guess.

  3. Work the answer

Do not accept the first response automatically. Correct misunderstandings, add missing facts, redirect emphasis, and tell AI where you disagree.

  4. Ask AI to improve your thinking

Use questions such as “What am I missing?”, “Challenge my reasoning,” and “What would make this fail?”

  5. Check before you trust

Verify important facts, numbers, assumptions, and recommendations. The level of verification should rise with the consequence of being wrong.

  6. Finish one result

Complete the actual task. The exercise is successful when something useful gets done, not when you have learned more terminology about AI.

Copy this prompt

Paste this into your AI tool
I want you to help me with a real business task.

CONTEXT: [What do you need to understand about the situation?]
ASSIGNMENT: [What do I want help accomplishing?]
REQUIREMENTS: [What must be true about the result?]
GUIDANCE: [What should you emphasize, question, compare, avoid, or challenge?]
OUTPUT: [What would a useful result look like?]

Before giving me a final answer, identify anything important that is unclear, missing, or based on an assumption.

Review your result

  • Did AI save time?
  • Did it improve the quality of the work?
  • Did it improve your thinking?
  • What did you have to correct?
  • What would you do differently the next time you use AI for this kind of work?

Operator example

SMB example

Before a vendor negotiation, give AI the publicly available vendor information, your objectives, constraints, and the topics you expect to discuss. Ask it to identify likely objections, questions you should ask, and three ways the meeting could go wrong. You still make the call; AI improves the preparation.

What not to do

Do not begin with a high-consequence task merely because it is impressive. Start with work you already understand well enough to judge the answer.

Save the result

Keep the final result where you normally keep the work. If the interaction revealed a reusable instruction about how you prefer AI to work, capture it for Teach AI How You Work.

Ready for the next step?

Most companies are using AI too small.

Employees writing faster emails is not transformation. Real AI leverage happens when capable leaders apply it to pricing, operations, planning, forecasting, execution, and decision-making. That shift produced $650,000 in measurable business value for one executive in eight months. That is the standard we build toward.
